Organic eggs have twice the carbon footprint of eggs from cage farming.

Welcome to one of the most uncomfortable sustainability paradoxes. A new study from Oxford (published in Royal Society Open Science) challenges a common consumer intuition: that “organic” and “climate‑friendly” are the same. This is not true for eggs — in fact, the opposite. What did the study find?

Shifting the entire British egg market to organic/free‑range would produce 2.31 million tonnes of CO₂e per year.

A fully caged system, on the other hand, emits only 1.18 million tonnes — roughly half.

Organic/free‑range also performs worse in other metrics: land use, water eutrophication from manure, higher flock mortality (predation, bird diseases).

Why is that?

Free‑range hens move outdoors and regulate their body temperature in variable weather — therefore they consume more feed. And the production of that feed (mainly soy and wheat) generates emissions through fertilizers, diesel and global supply chains.

Cage farming is simply more efficient in terms of caloric input per egg. However, the study has serious limitations that somewhat qualify its conclusions:

The data come from British farms from 2009–2010. They do not account for newer precision agriculture, low‑emission feed additives, or renewable energy on modern organic farms.

It deliberately leaves out the impacts of pesticides and local biodiversity loss — that is, areas where organic usually actually prevails.

Egg consumption worldwide is rapidly increasing, especially in Africa and Asia, where poultry is an accessible source of protein. Automatically adopting Western free-range requirements without technologies that cut feed emissions can paradoxically harm the climate.

The point isn’t “cages are good”. The point is that good animal welfare and low emissions often conflict — and sustainability needs to address this trade‑off openly, not hide behind the “organic” label. “Organic” and “climate‑friendly” are not automatically synonyms.
