France is the largest European producer with a production capacity of 13,861 GWh and more than 600 new projects under construction. The French model is based on smaller agricultural plants connected to the distribution network, which also stabilise farmers' incomes.

Denmark is the European leader in the share of biomethane in consumption — in August 2025 biomethane covered almost 41 % of domestic natural gas consumption. A typical Danish biomethane plant has a capacity of 35 GWh per year, four times more than a standard biogas plant. The country is moving towards a complete replacement of natural gas with biomethane.

In the Czech Republic, biomethane production doubled year‑on‑year — from 103 GWh to 211 GWh. However, development is hampered by unclear support conditions and slower permitting processes. In absolute volume, the Czech Republic still lags behind more advanced markets.

It will be crucial to establish a stable support environment, accelerate permitting, and enable the modernization of existing biogas plants.
